I avoided this book because it was one of "those" books...you know the ones...everyone has read it and goes on and on about how good it is. Two of my sisters have read the book, and went to see the movie and so I thought I'd better at least read it...we do all have similar taste in books, after all.
I was pleasantly surprised. I felt sorry for the main characters in this book at times, losing her mother and having to deal with the guilt. I found myself crying at times for her. And then the story beneath the story, about what it was like to be "colored" at that time just really hit me - it's something I'd never thought about before. The characters were a bit crazy at times, with their Lady In Chains and weird rituals, but it made everything interesting at least!
