This was an excellent book...although the beginning was pretty hard to read. In the beginning we were introduced to the main characters, and then led through Hurricane Katrina and the direct aftermath of that from the point-of-view of one of the detectives from a neighboring area that came in to help out. That part was VERY hard to read, because it was so real, so honest...and combined with the stories that the rest of us have heard about the destruction and loss of lives, not to mention the looting and violence and mass chaos that consumed New Orleans soon after the storms hit...it was just terrible. But, the story soon picked up and quickly sucked me in once I got past that part and into the plot. It kept me guessing right until the end, with a few surprise turns in the middle.
